Ear Reshaping

Ear Reshaping, or otoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure that is requested by young boys, girls and adults. Dr. Schulman has extensive experience in treating people of all ages interested in ear reshaping. He uses his artistic eye and advanced surgical techniques to:

  • Reduce the appearance of oversized ears
  • Correct ears that protrude far from the head
  • Correct asymmetries between the ears
  • Reconstruct ears in cases of birth defects or congenital problem

During consultation with Dr. Schulman, you will learn about the characteristics of your ears and the factors contributing to its appearance.  Dr. Schulman will then help you decide on a treatment plan that best meets your needs. You will also discuss anesthesia options such a local, regional, sedation and general, as well as learn about your surgical facility options.

 

Dr. Schulman has a bedside manner that makes young children comfortable with him. If you are a parent bringing your child in for consultation, rest assured that Dr. Schulman will make your child as comfortable as possible with the experience. He will include your child in all the discussion so that they will be less fearful about the procedure.  As a father, Dr. Schulman understands the concern for your child, and is dedicated to performing the surgery as safely as possible.  He advices that young children wait until they are 5 years old before having this surgery performed.

Ear Reshaping Surgery

During ear reshaping surgery, Dr. Schulman will make small incisions behind the ears. He may remove excess cartilage and trim skin when necessary. Dr. Schulman will then reshape the ears using carefully placed internal sutures. In cases, of over-protruding ears, he will place sutures that keep the ears closer to the side of your head.  After surgery, you will wear a head band to protect your newly reshaped ears.

 

Dr. Schulman will see you in the days following the procedure to guide you through the recovery process. Within a week, people who have had ear reshaping usually return to most normal activities such as work or school.  Dr. Schulman will carefully review when your are permitted to return to physical activities such as contact sports.

The procedure often provides for an enhancement in social, physical and professional activities.  It is extremely beneficial to young children who may have experienced teasing from peers.
