The Importance of Sunscreen (yes even in March!)

There are studies that show that 90% of skin aging is from external factors. You can just imagine how many of those external factors are sun related. That is why it is crucial to wear sun protection 365 days a year, not just in the summer months. Whenever there is sunlight, there are damaging UVA rays. Most people think that if their skin isn’t burning, there is no damage being done. An easy thing to remember is that UVA rays are the “aging” rays and are occuring year round, all day long. These rays penetrate through windows and even some clothing, so even if you’re not outside, you still need to protect yourself. UVB rays are “burning” rays and are strongest during summer months.

Another thing to remember when looking for a sunscreen is that number is not the most important; wearing an SPF 30 daily is sufficient. An SPF 50, 60 or even SPF 100 does not double, triple or quadruple the protection you’re getting. Also, the number only measures the amount of UVB protection. There is no standard measuring system for UVA protection as of now, but a good way to make sure you’re getting full spectrum protection is by looking at the ingredients in your sunscreen. Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide are two common physical sunscreens that block UVA and UVB rays.

Sunscreens with one or both of these physical ingredients do not always have to feel heavy and thick. Dr. Schulman’s Shield SPF 30 is a physical sunscreen that feels ultra-sheer and won’t clog pores. It’s also a tinted makeup primer that incorporates anti-oxidants to reverse the effect of past sun damage while preventing new damage. With Dr. Schulman’s Shield, you’re getting several products in one! By adding this simple step in your regimen each morning, you’re saving yourself from fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and of course, the potential of skin cancer. You’ll save time and money by avoiding pricey laser or skin treatments done to correct the sun damage.

Start using Shield and your skin will thank you! Sheild is available in Dr. Schulman’s Park Avenue office or online at MSMDskintherapy
