Can Liposuction improve your health? High volume liposuction can eliminate health problems associated with obesity.

The common thinking among plastic surgeons is that Liposuction is for body shaping, not weight loss. This is definitely true. The best candidates are people who are not particularly overweight, but have “problem areas” that they would like corrected. Perhaps this is the outer hips (“saddlebags”), flanks, abdomen, or inner thighs. Liposuction is a great way to remove some fat, and improve the shape of your body.

But what about those people who are overweight? Will liposuction do anything? Certainly. Liposuction is designed to remove fat. If you are overweight, liposuction can remove a certain volume of fat, and can reduce your overall weight. The thing to remember is that even with significant weight reduction via liposuction, there may not be significant improvement in body shape. But there are other good consequences. The reduction in weight can reduce the risk for medical problems associated with obesity, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, arthritis, and diabetes.

When liposuction is done under close monitoring by a board certified plastic surgeon working directly with a board certified anesthesiologist, up to 5 liters of fat can be removed safely in a single operation. This is the equivalent of 12 pounds. That is a lot of weight, and is lost in a matter of a few hours. Think how long it would take you to lose 12 pounds through diet and exercise. This procedure can even be repeated at a later date to remove another 12 pounds.

I have had several overweight patients who underwent high volume liposuction. They lost significant amount of weight and this fat removal from their body helped to improve their overall health. In fact, several of these patients were diabetic before the surgery and were able to stop all diabetes medications within a few weeks after the liposuction procedure. There is scientific evidence that is surfacing that talks about high volume liposuction as a treatment for type 2 diabetes in overweight patients. As a bonus, all of my patients looked much better after the surgery too!

If you are overweight, liposuction may be a procedure for you. While it will not remove the excess skin, and in some cases, it may make the excess hanging skin worse, it may be a way to improve your overall health. You need to understand that obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes place you at a slightly higher risk of peri-operative complications, so it is imperative that you consult with with a board certified plastic surgeon.
