Tori Spelling recently gave birth to her fourth child and unfortunately was re-hospitalized shortly after for complications resulting from her c-section. Rumors began flying that the real reason for her hospitalization was to have a “secret tummy tuck” according to a “friend” and reported by multiple online sites. Tori and her reps deny this story completely, although she did admit that she would like to have a tummy tuck at some point to regain her pre-pregnancy belly.
As a plastic surgeon specializing in body contouring, the idea of a tummy tuck after pregnancy is a great one. It will remove the loose skin and stretch marks that come with pregnancy. It will also tighten the abdominal muscles that become stretched during pregnancy. Timing for this surgery, however, is very important.
I recommend waiting approximately 9 months after delivery before having a tummy tuck. This allows the skin to tighten on its own and also allows the uterus to shrink to its normal size. Waiting will maximize your cosmetic results. Also, the recovery from a tummy tuck is quite painful and not something most women are wiling (or able) to do when they have a newborn.
There are some instances where a plastic surgeon can remove some excess skin at the same time as a c-section. This has been called a “C-Tuck”, but the amount of skin removed is limited, and no muscle tightening can be done because of a very large uterus. This may provide some improvement but I tell my patients that waiting nine months and then having a full tummy tuck will give them much better results and is worth the wait.
Commonly, a tummy tuck is combined with other surgeries such as breast lifting or breast implants into a single operation. This is called a “Mommy Makeover” and is an excellent option for those women who are done having children and want to regain their pre-pregnancy body. Each “Mommy Makeover” is customized to the specific needs of each patient.
