Interviewed as one of New York City's top cosmetic surgeons, Dr. Matthew Schulman told New York's PIX 11 News that about 25 percent of his business is now repairing botched plastic surgery performed by other doctors -- and even con artists posing as doctors.
The problem, he said, is that New York State rules allow any doctor to perform any procedure. "Dentists doing lipo, gynecologists doing breast implants. I've seen eye doctors doing butt lifts. It's crazy," Schulman said.
And, illegal procedures -- offered at low cost without a licence -- can lead to results that are unattractive, dangerous and sometimes deadly.
"It's very common for women to come in and have illegal silicone or other things not approved in the U.S. but allowed in other countries," he said. "They've got infections, hardness, lumps, chronic inflammation, skin breakouts."
Elizabeth Hernandez shared her experience in the PIX 11 News story "Botched: When plastic surgery goes horribly wrong — and how you can prevent it." Hernandez reveals an unskilled surgeon left her "totally deformed." She visited Brazilian butt lift surgery expert Dr. Schulman, who skillfully repaired the damage.
"I had to undo everything the other doctor did and then rebuild everything to give you this nice shape," he explained.
The number of patients seeking help after botched plastic surgery procedures has risen so much that the American Society of Plastic Surgeons was inspired to launch a "Do Your Homework" patient safety campaign to inform the public that not all doctors are qualified to perform cosmetic surgery.
The ASPS suggests ensuring your doctor is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (check their Find a Surgeon page) and that they operate in an accredited facility. They list the rigorous qualifications to be an American Society of Plastic Surgeons member.
