Male Liposuction Scars: Almost all cosmetic surgeries will result in at least a few scars. This is simply an inherent part of undergoing invasive surgery (surgery that involves incisions). Male liposuction is an invasive procedure, so scars will result.
Fortunately, liposuction incisions tend to be small. They only need to be large enough to allow a thin metal tube called a cannula through.
Likewise, working with an experienced plastic surgeon will help because they will use special techniques and tricks to camouflage the location of their incisions and ultimately minimize the appearance of those incisions as they heal. You can see from Dr. Schulman’s male liposuction patient before and after photos that scarring on his patients is hardly noticeable.
Here are a few more things you should know about male liposuction scars.
Scarring After Male Liposuction
A quick Google of “male liposuction before and after photos” or “liposuction before and after belly” will show you just how unobtrusive most male liposuction scars can be. While they are there, they are usually minimal.
This is largely because liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure to begin with. The incision points are extremely small and usually circular. This is instead of long incision scars, which are more common with procedures like tummy tucks.
Likewise, Dr. Schulman will choose discreet areas in which to make these incisions. For example, liposuction incisions can be made through the belly button or below the underwear line. That way, in addition to the healed incisions being small to begin with, they will also be in places where people won’t usually see them — even if you’re not wearing a shirt
It’s important to note here that some people are going to scar more easily than others. For example, patients with darker skin may end up with hyperpigmentation on their healed incision sites. Over time, even hyperpigmented scars will fade. However, they may be more noticeable to begin with.
Now, let’s discuss a few things you can do to help minimize the appearance of liposuction scars on your own.
Tips for Treating Male Liposuction Scars
The average male liposuction recovery time is about one to two weeks. After that point, most patients are able to return to work and many of their regular activities. It will take a bit longer to go back to exercise — usually around four to six weeks.
Full recovery from male liposuction and full realization of your results will take longer — anywhere from three to six months, on average. This is because it will take several months for all of the swelling to disappear.
It is during your initial liposuction recovery period that you must pay the most attention to your aftercare. You will go home from your surgery with detailed instructions on how to care for your incision sites and what you can and cannot do in terms of exerting yourself and positioning your body.
For example, you’ll be told the best way to sleep, how often to get up and walk around, how many pounds can safely lift, etc. Be sure to follow all of these instructions to the letter. It is of the utmost importance that you abide by this guidance because not doing so could compromise your overall results and may also make your scars more obvious.
For example, if you begin lifting toddlers, large boxes, or other heavy objects when you are not supposed to, you could put strain on your incision sites. Incision site tension and strain is one of the leading causes of noticeable scars.
Likewise, you will be told to keep your incision sites out of the sun. UV rays can cause damage to your healing skin, making scars thicker, darker, and raised — ultimately, more apparent. It’s important that you stay out of the sun, and if you must be exposed to sunlight, always cover your incision sites.
Here are some other things that may help to make your liposuction scars look better. Of course, you must always check with Dr. Schulman before trying anything on your own.
- Silicone gel sheets
- Scar massage
