Male Liposuction Recovery Time: What to Expect

Male Liposuction Recovery Time What To Expect

If you’ve found yourself Googling “male liposuction near me,” you’re not alone. Men, just like women, want flatter abs, a more chiseled torso, and a sleeker physique. But that’s not always possible through diet and exercise alone.

Fortunately, male liposuction is a highly effective cosmetic surgery that can remove excess fat from specific areas of the body like the flanks (love handles), abdomen, chin, and elsewhere. Take a look at these male liposuction before and after pictures to see the major improvements this procedure can make.

When researching male liposuction, some of the first questions patients have concern recovery time:

  • How long is recovery from male liposuction?
  • When can I go back to work?
  • When can I start exercising again?
  • Will I be in pain during my recovery?
  • Will I have liposuction scars after I’ve healed?
  • How can I plan for my recovery before undergoing liposuction?

Below, we’ll answer all of these questions and others to help you better prepare for your male liposuction surgery.

Male Liposuction Recovery Time

In the majority of cases, the initial male liposuction recovery time lasts for about one to two weeks. At this point, patients can usually go back to work. After approximately four to six weeks, patients can think about reintegrating exercise and more vigorous activities into their routines. And finally, after three to six months, complete results should be apparent, and most swelling should be gone.

If you want to know specifically what to expect 8 weeks after liposuction, 6 weeks after liposuction, or 4 months after liposuction, for example, these distinctive timeframes can be difficult to predict precisely, and that’s simply because every patient is different, and every surgery is different.

Still, let’s take a look at a general male liposuction recovery timeline. This will outline what to expect from male liposuction recovery week by week:

Immediately after surgery

Right after cosmetic surgery is when most patients will experience the most soreness. Take your pain medications as directed, get plenty of sleep, and drink lots of water. Over the next few weeks, you should feel much better.

Weeks 1 and 2

You should feel much better after the first two weeks. During this time, your swelling and bruising will diminish day by day, and you can usually return to work. Make sure to follow the recovery directions from your board certified plastic surgeon, continue to wear your compression garment, take one or two daily walks (around the house or down the driveway), and get lots of rest.

Weeks 3 and 4

You should not be experiencing much (if any) discomfort at this time; however, you’ll still want to take it easy. Do not strain or exert yourself too much, and wait to return to exercise until cleared to do so by Dr. Schulman.

Weeks 5, 6, and Beyond

By this point, you should be back to a normal routine, back to exercise (as tolerated), and feeling good. As the months go on, any of the remaining swelling will dissipate, your incisions will flatten and lighten up, and you’ll be able to enjoy the full results of your procedure.

Liposuction Recovery Tips

Get Plenty of Rest

Be sure to relax and rest for the first few weeks after surgery. You should get up and walk around briefly a few times a day, but other than that, make yourself comfortable in your bed or on the couch, and relax with a movie or a good book.

Treat Your Pain

Most patients will be sore for the first few days after surgery. This will dissipate as the days and weeks go on. But during these first few days, if you are experiencing pain, do take the pain medications prescribed to improve your comfort.

Avoid Smoking and Drinking

Smoking can inhibit your body’s natural ability to heal after cosmetic surgery and may cause further medical complications. Likewise, because hydration is necessary for a healthy recovery and alcohol is dehydrating, you should avoid drinking, especially for the first few weeks after your procedure.

Wear the Proper Clothing

Patients should avoid tight clothing after liposuction surgery as this may inhibit the drainage of excess fluid after surgery – a necessary process for recovery. At the same time, patients must wear their compression garments over their treatment areas.

Ask Questions

Dr. Schulman will explain what to look for in terms of potential complications. Side effects are rare; however, if bleeding, skin reactions, severe pain, lumps and bumps, or other alarming symptoms occur, do not hesitate to contact Dr. Schulman right away.

Will I Have Liposuction Scars?

Most of the time, male liposuction scars are so small that they are barely noticeable. The liposuction incisions that Dr. Schulman creates will also be placed in hard-to-see areas. He will only need to make them large enough to insert a cannula, which is a thin metal tube with a small diameter. The incisions will then be carefully closed.

When patients take good care of their incision sites, the wounds will heal smooth and flat. Over time, their bright pink or red appearance will soften to a lighter pink color and finally to a paler whitish color.

FAQ: Male Liposuction Recovery

On what parts of the body do most men get liposuction?

The liposuction procedure can be performed almost anywhere on the body. However, the majority of men seek liposuction for their abdomen, flanks (also known as love handles), or chin (to improve a double chin).

What is the average stomach liposuction recovery time?

After stomach liposuction (abdominal liposuction), most male patients are able to recover within one to two weeks, after which time they should be able to return to work. Most patients can return to exercise after four to six weeks.

What is the average liposuction love handles recovery time?

After liposuction on the flanks (love handles) most male patients are able to recover within one to two weeks, after which time they should be able to return to work. Most patients can return to exercise after four to six weeks.

What is tumescent liposuction?

Tumescent liposuction utilizes tumescent anesthesia and microcannulae for a more refined process of removing unwanted fat. The tiny cannulae create tunnels in the subcutaneous tissue, enabling a gentler and more efficient stubborn fat extraction compared to the use of larger cannulae. Notably, liposuction stands as the most frequently conducted cosmetic procedure in the United States.
