What’s Coming Up in Plastic Surgery for 2015? [Part 2]

Looking ahead to the new year, cosmetic procedures are expected to continue growing in popularity. Continuing the list we started in our previous blog post, here’s what the world of plastic surgery may see in 2015:

The Eyes Have It

The eyes are the major focal point of the face and a popular area for rejuvenation. Major advances in eye lift surgery (blepharoplasty) have made it easier than ever to improve the delicate eyelid area.

A variety of non-surgical treatments are also available for the eyes, for those who would rather not have surgery.

Keeping the Fat

Refinements in harvesting techniques will continue to fuel the boost in fat grafting. Surgeons like it as a facial filler because it lasts longer and looks more natural.

Dr. Matthew Schulman attracts patients from around the world with this exclusive SCOOP Lift buttock contouring procedure — his take on the popular Brazilian butt lift, which uses your body’s own fat to enhance your backside.

Breast augmentation can also be performed using a patient’s body fat. Using your own fat is safer, looks more natural and lasts longer than artificial implants.

Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff

More patients are requesting minor procedures that can give them a major boost in their confidence — little tweaks such as ear reshaping surgery (otoplasty), injectable fillers, the removal of moles or birthmarks, and upper-lip lifts.

So, What’s Next?
Exciting new medical advancements are always being developed, especially in the field of plastic surgery. Next on the horizon, surgeons are hoping the FDA will soon approve fat-melting facial injections that can help reduce the appearance of double chins. A new topical form of Botox is also waiting for FDA approval.

If you’re looking to improve your appearance in 2015, visit one of New York City’s top board-certified plastic surgeons, Dr. Matthew Schulman. Dr. Schulman’s exquisite work attracts celebrities and other patients from all over the world. Is Social Media leading to an increase in Plastic Surgery?

Social Media is all around us. Most people have Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest accounts and this is leading to an increase in plastic surgery procedures. The connection may at first confuse you, but it is not so far-fetched. Many of these social media sites focus on photographs. We are constantly posting photographs of ourself, our friends and families. Whether we like it or not, this is helping to emphasize appearance. Nobody wants to look bad in a photo that is put on Facebook and posted to the world. It naturally makes us self-conscious about our facial and body features because we are seeing them for the first time as others are seeing them. Too Hot To Hide Your Aging Neck or Double Chin

NYC Plastic Surgeon Introduces Laser Neck Lift with Immediate Results and No Scarring

Laser Neck Lift(New York, NY) Having an aging neck, oftentimes referred to as “turkey neck,” or even a fleshy double chin can make people feel very self-conscious.  As summer is creeping up upon us, it’s inevitably time to put away the turtleneck sweaters and scarves which so many use as a crutch to hide an unsightly neck.  Until now, a neck lift was quite an invasive surgery involving the removal of excess skin and altering neck muscles. It also resulted in long “tell-tale” scars around the ears.  Now with the introduction of Dr.  Schulman’s Laser Neck Lift, necks can be lifted, tightened and smoothed with a minimally invasive procedure that elicits immediate results, minimal downtime, and no scarring. The Importance of Sunscreen (yes even in March!)

There are studies that show that 90% of skin aging is from external factors. You can just imagine how many of those external factors are sun related. That is why it is crucial to wear sun protection 365 days a year, not just in the summer months. Whenever there is sunlight, there are damaging UVA rays. Most people think that if their skin isn’t burning, there is no damage being done. An easy thing to remember is that UVA rays are the “aging” rays and are occuring year round, all day long. These rays penetrate through windows and even some clothing, so even if you’re not outside, you still need to protect yourself. UVB rays are “burning” rays and are strongest during summer months.

Steven Tyler’s “Man Boobs” – a common problem

Steven Tyler's Man BoobsA photograph recently surfaced of Rocker Steven Tyler’s chest. I am writing this blog, not to poke fun at the Aerosmith frontman’s chest, but as an opportunity to discuss a very common problem among men. Gynecomastia, or male chest enlargement, is a complaint of men of all ages. It can develop anywhere from puberty to the 80’s. It can range from only mild chest enlargement or severe chest enlargement resembling female breasts. I have seen countless patients who report that they have not taken their shirt off in public for years, because of embarrassment. Imagine being a teenage boy and being so embarrassed that you will not go to the beach or the pool, or even change in the locker room. Surgical correction is possible and is life-changing!

What is “Bottoming Out” after breast augmentation?

It is common for your new breast implants to sit slightly high right after a breast augmentation. Over the next few months, the implants will drop into a normal position. Some refer to this process as “fluffing”. But what if your breast implants continue to drop, to an abnormal position? This is referred to as “bottoming out” and is a bad (but too common) complication of a breast augmentation.

Cosmetic Surgery Increasing in Popularity Among Males

Cosmetic surgery has had a reputation for being exclusive to the rich and famous, but the truth is that cosmetic surgery has become more mainstream and more common among the working middle class. I have seen this specifically in my practice. Despite my exclusive Park Avenue location in one of the richest zip codes in the nation, my waiting room is commonly filled with teachers, nurses, and secretaries sitting next to lawyers, executives, and actors. I love this diversity among my patients.
