Questions and Answers

Am I a candidate for the Pigment Correcting Peel?

If you have concerns of stubborn discoloration, melisma, sun damage or other hyperpigmentation issues, you may be a candidate for this peel. Dr. Schulman’s licensed medical aesthetician Giana Danza will analyze your skin prior to treatment and determine if this is the appropriate peel for your skin type and condition.

What does the Pigment Correcting Peel procedure involve?

The peel is quick, easy and painless! The first step of the treatment involves applying a retinol solution to the skin. Following the retinol, a gel peel solution is applied. The gel peel will remain on your skin between 3-5 hours, during which time you will avoid applying any makeup or skin care products including sunscreen. After the appropriate number of hours, you simply wash the peel off with a provided cleanser and begin the use of the products in the kit. You will receive specific instructions about product usage before you leave the office.

Can the Pigment Correcting Peel be combined with microdermabrasion, dermaplaning or laser treatments?

This peel is typically done alone and not combined with other treatments.

Is this treatment safe for pregnant or lactating women?

Not all chemical peels can be performed on pregnant or lactating women. However, there are some chemical peels that are completely safe and effective for use on pregnant or lactating women. Please notify your aesthetician if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant.

How often do I need to get this treatment done?

This peel can be done as frequently as 6 weeks apart or until full improvement is seen in the discoloration. Typically, patients will require a series of 2-4 for the most significant improvement in discoloration.

What do I need to do before and after my treatment?

You must discontinue any exfoliating products including alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) serums, scrubs, retinol night creams and topical prescriptions (Triluma, Retin-A, Tretinoin etc…) for at least 5 days prior to and 5 days after your treatment.

This peel comes with 5 products to take home and use after the treatment. You should avoid all other products except for the products you are given in the Pigment Correcting Peel kit. These products include a Cleanser, Moisturizer, Anti-Redness Balm, Sunscreen and a customized Brightening Cream.

It is very important to apply sunscreen daily after this treatment, as your skin will be more sensitive to the sun’s damaging rays.

Will my skin peel from this treatment?

You will most likely see actual skin flaking with this treatment that lasts 3-5 days. However, lack of peeling is NOT an indication that the peel was unsuccessful. If you do not notice actual peeling, please know that you are still receiving all the benefits of the chemical peel such as: stimulation of collagen production, improvement of skin tone and texture, softening of fine lines and decreased pigmentation. In addition to flaking, you may have some redness or sensitivity for 5-7 days.
