Liposuction NYC

New York City Liposuction is the desire to look good and not a shallow pursuit predicated on media images, as many would have you believe.

Liposuction remains the most commonly performed cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States and one of the most popular surgical procedure performed by New York plastic surgeon Dr. Matthew Schulman.

Dr. Schulman board certified plastic surgeon has performed liposuction in New York City for over 15 years and is considered among the best plastic surgeons NYC has to offer.

While the liposuction procedure doesn’t facilitate weight loss, it frequently serves as motivation for patients to enhance their diet and exercise habits after surgery.

What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is the process of removing fat cells from your “trouble spots”. These are commonly the thighs, arms, tummy and neck, but fat cells can be removed from virtually any area on your body. We remove the fat using the gentlest and most advanced techniques, minimizing the pain and recovery.

Types of liposuction techniques:

  • Traditional Liposuction: Traditional liposuction uses a cannula to remove fat cells from the body. This is considered an “older” way of performing the surgery and has a higher incidence of swelling, bruising, and pain. Traditional has essentially been replaced by more modern techniques described below.
  • Tumescent Liposuction: This is a safer and easier form. It involves first injecting tumescent fluid (a combination of salt water, numbing medicine, and epinephrine) into the area prior to removing the fat cells. This minimizes tissue trauma and blood loss, improving the overall recovery.
  • Power-Assisted Liposuction: Power assisted liposuction uses tumescent fluid as described above, together with a special a vibrating suction device to remove the fat. The vibrating device help to break up the fat cells as it is being removed. This allows for smoother and frankly, more surgeon comfort. Think of it like an electric toothbrush!
  • Energy-Assisted Lipo: This type of uses energy to help break up the fat cells and stimulate more skin retraction. There are a variety of different devices, and some use laser energy, heat energy, or sound waves.

During your consultation, Plastic Surgeon NYC Dr. Schulman will discuss which liposuction surgical procedure is best for you.

Meet Dr. Schulman – NYC Liposuction Surgeon

“I say all the time that liposuction is easy to do, but hard to do well.”  In theory, it is a simple procedure, where you just suck out the fat. But it is much more. It is a sculpting procedure to remove stubborn areas of fat that is resistant to diet and exercise.  If you have ‘problem’ areas, then this may be the right procedure.

Even after lipo, you still want to look natural, so we need to keep those natural contours.  My team will also help you throughout the liposuction recovery process so you can get the best possible results from your procedure.

Liposuction Surgery Process

Dr. Schulman performs liposuction in NYC in a fully accredited and certified operating facility located within his New York City office. This ensures his patients’ safety, comfort and privacy. During the liposuction procedure, he employs refined techniques and advanced technology to remove localized areas of fat and sculpt newly defined body contours.

Immediate prior to the surgery, he will first mark your body to identify targeted areas of fat removal. This is done with you standing, so that he can address right areas even as things change when you are laying down.

We will also take pictures if we haven’t already, so that we both have a before-and-after view of what has been done.

Next, you will get anesthesia. We will either provide local anesthetic to numb the area and remove any chance of pain, or we will place you completely “under” if we’re addressing a larger area of the body. The doctor will then perform the procedure you have agreed on.

You will wake up in our recovery room where our highly trained registered nurses will attend to you. You should expect to stay a few hours in recovery, until you feel better and good enough to be safely discharged home.

Liposuction Recovery Time

Most patients will experience bruising and swelling after. The extent will depend on the amount of fat removed and the amount of areas treated. Most patients will feel back to normal within a few days, but recovery from very extensive or high volume can take several weeks. The results will be evident when swelling subsides in the weeks following the procedure, but it can take several months, and even up to a year, to see your final improvements.

However, it is important that your body have support for healing after surgery. While it is a minimally invasive surgery, it is still surgery and some degree of recovery is needed.  You will be required to wear a compression garment on the treated areas twenty-four hours a day for the duration specified by Dr. Schulman.

The compression garment will reduce swelling, allow for a speedier recovery and augment the results of the procedure. Most patients will wear a garment for about six to eight weeks. Dr. Schulman will discuss his specific post-operative garment protocol.

Overall, recovery is much easier than with most surgical procedures, so you needn’t worry about taking a lot of time off of work or school.  You’ll be back to yourself in no time – but with less fat!

Liposuction Scars

Any surgical process like liposuction involving incisions carries the risk of leaving scars, but it’s important to note that the resulting scar may not always be apparent to the naked eye.
Opting for a board certified plastic surgeon and diligently adhering to postoperative care instructions can minimize the visibility of any scarring resulting from your liposuction procedure.

Real Patient Testimonial

Real Patient Testimonial

I think it goes without saying that making the decision to get surgery and selecting the medical professional to accomplish those goals for you can be a very painstaking process. I am very confident in saying that this was never the issue with Dr. Matthew Schulman. Your safety, your results, and the experience of the man behind those tools are what counts the most.

Planning for the Procedure

Before you come in for your treatment, it’s important you put good plans in place. This means you should make preparations regarding:

  • Payment for Surgery: Liposuction is an elective cosmetic procedure and will not be covered by any medical insurance. Elective surgeries need to be paid in full prior to the procedure, however, there are several outside financing companies that may interest you. Our office can assist you in obtaining financing for your procedure.
  • Get Time Off Work or School: While most patients have a short recovery time after liposuction, it’s important to give yourself time to heal. The amount of time required will depend on the extent of your procedure. Dr. Schulman will be able to advise you about your required recovery time so you can make pre-arrangements with work or school.
  • Enlist the Help of a Partner or Loved One: Don’t plan on undergoing surgery and then taking care of yourself. You will need someone to drive you home from the surgery.  If you are having general anesthesia, then you will need someone with you for the first 24 hours in case you are foggy from the medications. From there, it’s smart to have someone to help you out around the house for a few days, to reduce the chances of disrupting the surgical site and impacting your healing.
  • Fill Any Prescriptions: You will be given prescription for pain medication and antibiotics. You should fill your prescriptions before surgery so that you are well prepared and do not need to make a pharmacy run after your surgery.

During your liposuction procedures consultation and pre-op appointment, Dr. Schulman will review these instructions. If you have any questions, however, be sure to write them down to remember to ask during your pre-op appointment.

Questions and Answers: NY Liposuction

If you’re like most people, you probably have some questions about liposuction result remaining. Here are some of the most common queries and their answers, so you can make a more informed decision today.

When is Liposuction Appropriate?

Liposuction is not a substitute for eating well or exercising. It is not meant to remove all the fat in your body. Rather, it is intended for fat deposits that don’t respond to diet or exercise. It is a shaping procedure, not a weight loss procedure. Liposuction is best for people who are in good shape, but just have some “problem areas”.

Who is not an Ideal Liposuction Candidate?

Liposuction removes fat. It does not remove excess skin. If you have laxity of skin form pregnancies, aging, or weight loss, liposuction may not be the best procedure for you. You may be a better candidate for a excess skin removal procedure such as a tummy tuck. Also, if you are overweight, then you should lose weight before having any body shaping procedure. Dr. Schulman recommends that your Body Mass Index be 30 or below for an elective cosmetic procedure.

How long does liposuction last?

The longevity of your liposuction results is a key consideration. Thanks to the removal of fat cells during the lipo procedure, the results are typically regarded as permanent since your body cannot generate new fat cells to replace them.

Nevertheless, sustaining a healthy lifestyle post-procedure remains crucial for optimal and enduring outcomes.

Can I lose 30 pounds with liposuction?

Liposuction has been approved by the FDA to remove up to 11 pounds of fat, approximately five liters. While this technically represents the maximum potential fat loss post-op, lipo should not be considered a universal standard for everyone undergoing this procedure. Individual results may vary, and it’s essential not to set rigid expectations solely based on this upper limit.

Does stomach flatten after liposuction?

Indeed, achieving a flat stomach through liposuction is possible, but it comes with no absolute assurances. The procedure can effectively remove approximately one-third of the fat in a sizable targeted area, such as the abdomen.

Is liposuction a body contouring procedure?

Procedures for body contouring encompass panniculectomy, tummy tuck, liposuction, lipo 360 and excisional body lifts like lower body lifts, arm lift, inner thigh lift, or buttock augmentation.

How long does the procedure take?

The surgical time will depend on the extent of liposuction and the areas treated. This procedure can take anywhere from one hour to five hours. Dr. Schulman will be able to estimate your surgical time prior to the procedure.

Are There Complementary Treatments for Liposuction?

Yes. In addition to liposuction, you may require skin removal in the form of a tummy tuck, arm lift, breast lift or lower body lift. Also, Dr. Schulman may discuss how he can use the removed fat to help contour your body.

This may be in the form of a Brazilian Butt Lift, in which the removed fat is re-injected into your butt or hips. Liposuction is often combined with other breast procedures as part of a complete mommy makeover. Any of these treatments can further enhance your form, giving you a much greater sense of confidence and happiness. If you’d like to learn more about any of these treatments, feel free to click on the applicable link or contact our office today!

Do You Offer Non-Surgical Options?

Yes, we do. In some cases, fat can be destroyed using Kybella, an injectable material that dissolved fat. Also, our office features the latest in radio-frequency treatments for fat reduction, called TruSculpt iD.  These non-surgical treatments may be a good option for people with only a small amount of excess fat or that do not want invasive treatment for tightening.

Should you include liposuction with your tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck surgery liposuction should achieve the smooth, toned abdomen you’re looking for. By combining tummy tuck liposuction to form lipoabdominoplasty and is the best choice for you if your goals are to remove fat and tighten your abdominal area.

How painful is liposuction?

Individual pain tolerance varies, but overall, liposuction is typically well tolerated. During the initial recovery phase, patients may encounter mild discomfort, particularly when transitioning from a resting position to movement.

How much weight can you lose with liposuction?

Liposuction can lead to an average fat loss of about five (and potentially up to 11) pounds, it’s essential to understand that weight loss isn’t the primary objective. Liposuction aims to target and eliminate stubborn fat for body contouring, specifically addressing areas that may not respond effectively to diet and exercise.

The ultimate goal is to help you achieve the desired look and feel, enhancing your overall appearance and confidence.
