NYC Neck and Chin Liposuction -Double Chin Removal

Liposuction of the neck will remove the layer of fat that is giving you that full, round appearance.

People often hate their neck. Now with selfies and video conference calls everywhere, there is just no hiding your neck. You can’t spend the summer months in scarves and turtlenecks. So what are your options?  Usually it is a combination of excess fat and some mild skin laxity that is responsible for your “double chin” or “turkey neck” appearance. Dr. Matthew Schulman is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon who may have a minimally invasive option for you – neck liposuction. For the right person, this is a good alternative to a more invasive surgical neck lift.

Liposuction is the removal of fat using small tubes, or cannulas. This can be done anywhere on the body where there is unwanted fat. Liposuction is commonly done on the abdomen, flanks, back, thighs, and neck.

The ideal Neck Liposuction candidate

The ideal candidate for neck rejuvenation with neck liposuction (double chin removal)  is a patient with fullness to the neck that is predominantly fat and not hanging skin. This is because liposuction, no matter where on the body it is done, addresses fat and not skin. How can you tell if you have fat or skin? Give your neck a pinch. If it feels thick and firm, then it is most likely fat, and you may be a good liposuction candidate. It only takes a very small amount of fat removal to see a dramatic improvement in your neck.  If it feels thin and “wiggly”, it is most likely a skin issue and you may need to explore a skin removal procedure such as a neck lift.

Before and After Images

Neck Liposuction: Patient 1

Our patient was unhappy with her neck and she says that every person in her family has the same neck shape. Despite recent weight loss, her neck did not change. She had liposuction to remove the fat from this area and this was done with a single puncture under the chin. No skin was removed but you can see how well the skin retracted.

Neck Liposuction: Patient 2

Take a look at this result of neck liposuction in our young patient. This was done with a very rapid recovery, and you can see how nice her new neckline looks. You can return to regular activities in just a few days after neck liposuction.

Neck Liposuction: Patient 3

Here is another view of our previous patient. Notice how her entire profile is improved. Again, this was done by removing fat with liposuction, and no invasive skin removal. This procedure can be done under local anesthesia and people can return to regular activities very rapidly.

Liposuction Technique for Double Chin Removal

Liposuction of the neck begins with the infiltration of a specialized numbing solution called tumescent solution. This is a solution of salt water, adrenaline, and numbing medicine that numbs the area, plumps up the fat cells, and constricts blood vessels. The tumescent solution is placed into the layer of fat in the neck, which is just below the skin, but above any vital structures. This is done with a small needle. After letting this solution sit for a few minutes, a small cannula is inserted and the fat is removed. This is done through a tiny puncture below the chin and sometimes behind the earlobes.  After removing the fat, the patient is placed in a compression garment for the neck. This procedure takes under an hour and can be performed using just the numbing solution or with the addition of intravenous sedation in our certified operating room.

Matthew Schulman, M.D.

Meet Dr. Schulman – Neck Liposuction New York City

“Excess fat on your neck  is unlike excess fat on other parts of your body since you can’t hide it beneath clothes. It’s right there for everyone to see. Often, people with unwanted neck fat are not overweight. Some people just simply store fat in this area, even if they are at their ideal weight. The benefits of neck liposuction is that it removes that excess fat, and also gives a more defined jawline. This procedure is desirable to young and old, men and women.

There is a good chance that you can have neck liposuction under local anesthesia. This means that you can remain awake, but you won’t feel anything, so your recovery will be quick.”

The recovery for Neck Liposuction

Just like any liposuction procedure, there will be some bruising and swelling. This severity and duration will depend on different factors, such as the amount of lipo you had done and your own tendency to bruise and swell. There is very little pain after this procedure, and most patients require nothing stronger than Tylenol. In terms of activities after neck liposuction, there will be very little restrictions. Dr. Schulman recommends that you take it easy for a few days to a week.  This does not mean that you need to lay in bed. In fact, you can begin normal daily activities right away. However, you should avoid exercising since elevations of your blood pressure will make you more bruised and more swollen. You will need to wear that compressive neck garment at all times for a week. This will help your recovery. You will see your results relatively quickly. As the swelling decreases over the first few weeks, you will begin to see improved shape and contour of your jaw and neckline. You should see your final results in about 6 months.

Neck Liposuction versus Neck Lift

Neck liposuction is removal of fat with small cannulas through tiny holes. As stated earlier, this only removes fat and any appearance of skin reduction is the normal skin tightening that happens after liposuction. This is a minimally invasive procedure that can be done under local anesthesia in under 1 hour.

A neck lift is an invasive surgical procedure that combines skin removal and usually tightening of the neck muscles and liposuction. This is done through incisions under the chin and behind the ears. A neck lift requires general anesthesia and can take 2-3 hours.  This is a significantly more invasive procedure with additional recovery time and scarring. This is designed for the person with loose skin of the neck, usually from weight loss or aging.

Your Neck Liposuction consultation

During your consultation with Dr. Schulman, he will examine you and guide you about the best procedure for you. It is possible that neck liposuction will provide you with excellent results and minimal pain and recovery. However, if you have more significant laxity of the skin, you may do better with a surgical neck lift procedure, or even a facelift.

Questions and answers about Neck Liposuction

Liposuction is performed through very tiny puncture holes. This is usually beneath the chin, in a normal crease, and sometimes behind each earlobe. So yes, there will be scars, but they are so tiny, it is unlikely you will even see them yourself after you are healed.

In general, if you gain weight after liposuction, the fat tends to NOT return to the area you had liposuction. This means that your neck results should last, even with a little weight gain. Of course, the aging process still continues, so even if the fat does not come back, you may experience some skin laxity as you age.

Technically, neck liposuction will not directly improve your jowls, but it will clean up the jawline and give the appearance of jowl improvement. If you have severe jowling, then a facelift may be the more appropriate procedure for you.

Neck liposuction is good for anyone with excess fat of the neck. This is one of the cosmetic procedures that is done fairly equally on both men and women.

Neck liposuction is commonly done with other procedures. Many patients have this done with things on totally different parts of the body such as breast implants, tummy tucks, mommy makeover and Brazilian butt lifts. It is also commonly done together with other procedures in the same anatomic area such as chin implant and facelifts.
