NYC Temporary Lip Fillers

You are here because you want to change the appearance of your lips. Perhaps you want to increase the volume of your lips, change the shape of your lips, or smooth lines around your lips.

Temporary fillers are good options to help you achieve your desires.  There are several fillers from the Juvederm and Restylane family of fillers. Each is slightly different, and Dr. Schulman will help you determine which is the best one for you and your needs.

Fillers are injected during a simple in-office procedure. Bruising and swelling can occur, but you can resume normal activities immediately.

Basic Facts about Lip Fillers

Even though there are a variety of lip fillers, the most common lip fillers are made of hyaluronic acid gel. This is essentially a sugar gel that is used to temporarily plump the lips. The results are seen immediately and can last in most people from 6-9 months.  There are a variety of different fillers, and while they all are hyaluronic acid fillers, they have varying degrees of thicknesses. These differences in the gels makes some fillers better than others for specific purposes. For example, some thicker fillers may be better at adding volume, while thinner fillers may be better when trying to fill small vertical lines around the lips or define the borders of the lip.

Lip fillers are temporary. This means that the body will naturally break down these sugar gels over time. Everyone is different, but most people experience good results for 6-9 months. After your body breaks down the filler, your lips will return to normal size and shape.

What type of things can lip filler do?

Lip fillers are very versatile. They can do a variety of things, depending on what you want. This includes:

  • increase the overall volume of your lips
  • correct some asymmetry of your upper and lower lips
  • fill natural defects in the lips
  • fill small vertical lines around the lip
  • define the lip line and lip borders

This means that if your lips have changed as you have aged, lip filler may be a good option to restore the lost volume.  Also, if you just have never been happy with the appearance of your lips, lip fillers may be for you.

Matthew Schulman, M.D.

Meet Dr. Schulman – Lip Fillers New York City

“Sometimes you just want your lips fuller. Maybe it was because you were born with thin lips, or maybe they just deflated with age. Or maybe you have a top lip and lower lip that are different sizes and just don’t seem to match. Whatever the reason, lip fillers can be an easy way to improve the appearance of your lips. Just because certain celebrities have overdone lips, doesn’t mean that you will. I believe in keeping things natural looking and if you are too, then we are a good match.”

During Your Appointment

During your visit, Dr. Schulman, or his certified injector, will evaluate your lips and help you decide which filler is best for you. Our office has virtually every filler available, so we can use whichever is best for you. We will then apply a topical numbing cream to your lips to make you more comfortable during your injection. The filler is then injected using a small needle. Modern fillers have numbing medicine mixed in it, so this treatment is generally very well tolerated. The injections take just a few minutes. Afterwards, you will be given an ice pack to help decrease the bruising and swelling that normally occurs after the injection. You are then able to go back home and resume all normal activities. We will recommend avoiding exercise for 1-2 days, just to help minimize bruising and swelling. Bruising and swelling is normal, and this can last a few days to a week.

After Your Appointment

There is usually some temporary bruising and swelling in the days after the injection and you can help minimize this by reducing physical activity, icing the area, avoiding aspirin and ibuprofen, and using herbal supplements like arnica and bromelain. Fillers usually look best after 2 weeks and will feel soft and natural.  Most people find that this filler lasts about 6-9 months. Of course, there are always people who find the filler lasts longer, or shorter, than the average.

If you are interested in getting lip fillers, make sure to find an injector who shares your aesthetic vision so that you can get the look you want. Also make sure your injector is familiar with safe injection techniques so that you can avoid complications.

Questions and answers about Temporary Lip Fillers

Filler is injected with small needles. The lips are naturally very sensitive, but you will have numbing creams applied and possible a nerve block. This will make the injections very tolerable. Afterwards, there will be some swelling and tenderness but it is usually not very  problematic.

Most people find good results for 6-9 months.

Fillers always “work” since they are adding volume to your lips. However, there are some people who metabolize the filler very quickly and may find that the results don’t last as long as in others.  Changing the type of filler may help, or you can try more permanent options like a lip implant.

There are a variety of different fillers, and these are usually variations of the same material. It is impossible to say which is “best” since they are all slightly different. Some may be better for some people and this should be discussed with your injector.

The price may vary between doctors and geographic regions, but a syringe of filler is usually priced between $600 and $1000.

Of course! It is very common for people to get multiple areas treated with filler at the same time. This may be the cheeks, undereyes, lips, chin, etc.

No. The amount of filler that is injected is not such a large volume that it will stretch out the skin of your lips. Also, when the filler is broken down by your body, it happens slowly and the skin of the lips retracts back to normal.
