What to Know About Facelifts and Necklifts

Getting a facelift or necklift can give you a more youthful, fresher appearance — especially if you’re struggling with signs of aging. Sunken cheeks, an undefined jawline, “turkey neck,” sagging jowls, and other issues can all be remedied with these two procedures.

Knowing whether to get a facelift, a necklift, or both depends on the specific issues you’re facing, and the answer isn’t always cut and dry. If you’re experiencing sunken cheeks but also have a bit of excess skin on your neck you’d like to get rid of, you may only need to have a facelift to fix both issues. Dr. Schulman can help you decide on the best procedure(s) for you.

Let’s take a closer look at both the facelift and necklift procedure.

What Is a Facelift?

A facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that produces a more youthful appearance in the face. While wrinkles and fine lines aren’t necessarily remedied with a facelift, the procedure targets deep folds, sagging skin, loss of contour, loss of firmness, and other age-related issues.

Specifically, this procedure can refresh your appearance in the following ways:

  • Improve facial sagging of the cheeks and neckline
  • Restore the youthful curves to the face
  • Correct sunken cheeks
  • Reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles of the face
  • Redefine the jawline
  • Tighten the neck

What Is a Necklift?

A necklift, also known as lower rhytidectomy, is a surgery that improves typical signs of aging on the neck and jaw. In many men and women, the first significant signs of aging are an uncontoured jawline, visible jowls, and excess skin on the neck. A necklift addresses these issues and others.

This procedure can:

  • Reduce excess neck skin
  • Tighten the skin on the neck
  • Get rid of abnormal neck contours
  • Reduce or reposition excess fat and skin in the jowls/jawline area

Your Facelift or Necklift Consultation

Whether you’re interested in a facelift, necklift, or both, during your consultation with Dr. Schulman, he will evaluate the appearance of your entire face and neck. This will give him a good idea of what procedure(s) will be right for you.

At this appointment, you will also learn about the causes of facial aging and the ways in which a facelift and/or necklift procedure can reverse these issues. Dr. Schulman will discuss the various rhytidectomy techniques that will best meet your needs, and you will even learn about anesthesia choices, facility options, and the typical recovery process.

Near the end of your appointment, Dr. Schulman will recommend a treatment plan to achieve your face and neck rejuvenation goals. Your custom plan may include other procedures such as eyelid surgeryforehead lift, or chemical peels.

The Facelift and Necklift Procedures

The Facelift Procedure

During facelift surgery at our state-of-the-art New York City facility, Dr. Schulman creates an incision in front of the ear, concealed in the natural creases. This incision extends a variable amount into the hairline and behind the ear depending on the amount of excess skin. Next, he elevates the facial skin, exposing the underlying fat and muscles. Then, he meticulously returns these underlying structures to their normal, youthful position. Excess skin of the face and neck is removed.

The Necklift Procedure

During necklift surgery — also performed at our state-of-the-art New York City facility — Dr. Schulman will create an incision at sideburn level within the hairline, which will then pass behind the ear. In a typical surgery, the incision will also go further back, following the hairline down and around. The skin, fat, and muscle will then be manipulated to achieve a more youthful appearance. Excess fat will be repositioned or removed, and excess skin will be removed. Neck muscles may be tightened.

What to Expect After Facelift or Necklift Surgery

After either of these surgeries (or joint face and necklift surgery), you will return home the same day. Dr. Schulman will assist you throughout the entire recovery period. The recovery is remarkably pain-free, and the majority of Dr. Schulman’s patients never feel the need to take any pain medicine.  Many patients return to work within 10 days to two weeks, depending on the amount of swelling and bruising.

The natural beauty of your results will be revealed when swelling and bruising subsides. Dr. Schulman uses only techniques that offer long-lasting results. Most patients can expect their results to last upwards of 10 years.
