Can You Fix Botched Chin Liposuction?

Can You Fix Botched Chin Liposuction

We certainly hope to never see patients who’ve had the unfortunate experience of a botched chin liposuction. But occasionally we do have such patients come to see us. And in these cases, we are happy to say that there is often a way to correct the neck lipo in NYC surgery and get patients back to a chin and neck contour they can feel good about.

Gone Wrong Botched Chin Liposuction: What Can Happen?

With a double chin botched chin liposuction, there are several things that can occur and cause trouble. But before we get into these, we must explain the general process of chin liposuction surgery.

What Is Chin Liposuction?

Chin liposuction removes unwanted fat from the neck area and along the chin and jaw line. Excess fat in this area can be caused by genetics, weight gain (weight fluctuation), and aging. Keep in mind, however, that chin liposuction is only for removing excess fat. If you have excess skin on your neck area, you’d be more likely to benefit from a neck lift.

Initial chin liposuction procedures are quite simple. We start by meeting with you for a consultation appointment. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Matthew Schulman will talk to you about what you’re looking to accomplish with surgery.

He’ll then perform a short physical exam to assess the amount of fat around your neck area and the elasticity of your skin in this region. If chin liposuction is the best option and you are a good candidate for surgery, we’ll set up the operation.

On surgery day, anesthesia will be administered first. Then, Dr. Schulman will make a series of small incisions around the target area. Typically, one incision is made directly beneath the point of the chin, and sometimes, two additional incisions are made — one behind each of your ears. These are very small incisions that typically heal nicely and are hardly noticeable, even upon close inspection.

Once the incisions are made, Dr. Schulman will use small cannulae (thin hollow tubes made of metal) to gently remove the unwanted fat cells. The incisions are then meticulously closed, and bandages and a compression garment will be applied.

Chin Liposuction Gone WrongWhat Can Go Wrong With Chin Liposuction

With any type of plastic surgery, it’s possible for complications to occur such as infection, bleeding, poor wound healing, or undesirable results. If you choose a board certified plastic surgeon and they have experience performing your desired surgery, these issues are highly unlikely.

However, complications do occur, and with chin liposuction, if there is a problem, it is typically one of the following:

Uneven results

Liposuction must be carefully performed so that the same amount of fat is removed (and left in place) on either side of the neck and chin area. When this is not achieved, you may have a botched chin liposuction procedure on your hands, and chin liposuction revision surgery may be necessary.

Too much fat removed (or not enough)

Sometimes, an excess amount of fat is removed so that the patient looks gaunt and unnatural. While those with excess fat along their necks indeed do want to appear sleeker with a more defined jaw and chin, removing too much fat causes the opposite problem of looking too “chiseled” and unnatural.

Conversely, sometimes not enough fat is removed so that the outcome does not achieve the desired goals of the patient. In either of these botched double chin lipo situations, revision liposuction or fat transfer may be able to correct the problem.

Contour irregularities

Lastly, sometimes there are issues with lumps, bumps, and odd divots after a chin lipo surgical procedure. In these cases, the revision surgeon would need to go back in and recontour the chin and neck area, smoothing the irregularities and providing a more natural look.

FAQ: Botched Chin Lipo Revision Surgery

Can you have a chin implant botched chin liposuction?

It’s possible that any cosmetic surgery might encounter problems that could result in a poor outcome. However, if you choose the right board certified plastic surgeon — with experience performing your desired surgery and a track record of success — problems are unlikely.Chin Liposuction Botched

If you underwent a chin implant surgery that led to a poor result, look for a plastic surgeon who may be able to correct the issue(s) and provide you with an improved outcome. Performing chin liposuction or chin implant correction surgery is more challenging than the initial procedures (usually due to chin lipo scar tissue), but it can be done.

Does chin lipo leave saggy skin?

If it does, you may not have undergone the right surgery. While a small amount of skin laxity (loose skin) may occur normally after chin liposuction, it should not be a lot.

In fact, those with poor skin laxity should not undergo chin liposuction most of the time because the outcome will be sagging skin. Basically, the skin along the neck doesn’t have the elasticity to retract to a smaller, tighter position after fat removal via chin lipo. This is more common in older patients or patients who have lost a large amount of weight.

In these cases, your surgeon should direct you to a neck lift or a combination neck lift and chin liposuction surgery if excess fat is also present.
