Ultimate Guide to BBLs

Ultimate Guide to BBLs

The Brazilian butt lift is a revolutionary cosmetic procedure that enlarges the buttocks without implants.

Rather, the patient’s own body fat is used. In turn, this allows the patient to slim certain parts of their body — like the abdomen or the upper arms — and plump up other areas — namely, the buttocks and hips.

If you’ve heard about the Brazilian butt lift New York City procedure and are intrigued about what it may be able to accomplish for your figure, you’ve come to the right place. Below, we’ve put together a comprehensive guide of everything you need to know about the Brazilian butt lift procedure.

What Is a BBL?

A Brazilian butt lift — also known as a BBL — is a procedure that enlarges your butt and hips using fat from your own body. The surgery necessitates a two-step process.

First, fat is harvested from the body via liposuction. The fat is then processed outside the body. Then, in the second phase, the fat is reinjected into the body in areas where you would like to see more volume around the hips and butt. Fat can be used to make the butt rounder, perkier, wider, tighter, higher, more athletic, or any combination of these traits.

What Can a Brazilian Butt Lift Do?

Naturally, a Brazilian butt lift is best for men and women who are interested in widening their hips and/or creating a larger butt in general. This description can encompass a lot of different things, though, so let’s go over some of the specific ways a Brazilian butt lift can help you achieve your ideal figure.

A Brazilian butt lift can do the following:

  • Increase buttocks fullness
  • Increase buttocks projection
  • Change the contours of your buttocks
  • Improve buttocks roundness
  • Help balance your entire figure
  • Improve skin smoothness on the buttocks and hips
  • Improve dimpling on the buttocks and hips
  • Slim excess fat around the body (on areas like the tummy, thighs, upper and lower back, and upper arms)
  • Give you an hourglass figure
  • Give you a more athletic shape
  • Make you look younger

What Makes a Good Candidate for BBL?

The best candidates for Brazilian butt lifts:

  • Would like to have a fuller, rounder, or wider butt and hips
  • Have good skin elasticity
  • Are physically healthy
  • Have no major medical issues that could put them at risk
  • Are non-smokers
  • Have realistic expectations about cosmetic surgery and their bodies
  • Have enough excess fat to harvest and reinject

It is rare, but a small number of people may not be eligible for this surgery because they are too thin and, therefore, don’t have enough fat to harvest. In this case, they would need to opt for butt implants to achieve their desired volume.

Why Are BBLs Necessary?

There are a multitude of reasons why a patient may want a Brazilian butt lift. For starters, time itself is usually the biggest culprit. Over time, gravity slowly pulls on our bodies and can make features that were once perky and upright, droopy and sagging. This can certainly happen with the buttocks.

Other factors may cause patients to desire a fuller, rounder butt and hips as well.

For example, the bodies of women who become pregnant change drastically while carrying their baby, giving birth, and/or breastfeeding. In fact, after pregnancy (and especially after multiple pregnancies), it’s not uncommon for a woman’s body composition to be permanently altered. Fat may be distributed in an entirely different way than it was prior to her pregnancies. When this happens, the buttocks may end up sagging or drooping when it used to be perky and full.

Other reasons why patients may be interested in getting a Brazilian butt lift include genetic factors and extreme weight fluctuations. For example, if you recently lost a significant amount of weight, the ways in which your rear is shaped and positioned may have permanently changed.

What to Expect at Your Consultation Appointment

At your consultation appointment with Dr. Schulman, you will discuss exactly what you are looking for in your BBL results.

For example, if you would like to have a “bubble butt” that has a more athletic appearance, this is certainly an option. Or, some patients are interested in having their butt look more like a heart shaped bbl shapes. Some patients want wide, Kim Kardashian hips while others want hips that naturally flow into their thighs and waist.

You will have a lot of options when it comes to liposuction as well. You may choose to remove only what fat is necessary for reinjection into the buttocks and hips area. Or, perhaps you want full body liposuction that slims and shapes all of your contours. Be sure to explain to Dr. Schulman what your preferences are, and use our BBL before and after pictures as a guide.

Your consultation will also include a physical exam and a discussion of your medical history. So, be sure to bring a list of any medications or supplements you are taking, and be open about any medical issues that may impact your surgery.

BBL Procedure Steps

All Brazilian butt lifts are performed at an accredited surgical facility. A BBL is an outpatient procedure, so you’ll be able to go home on the same day as your surgery. Just be sure to have someone there to drive you.

Depending on how much liposuction is performed and how much fat will be reinjected, you can estimate your Brazilian butt lift will take between three and four hours.

Surgery Prep

Because of the invasiveness of the procedure, Brazilian butt lifts necessitate general anesthesia before the surgery, which means you will be completely “put under” during surgery. This is for your safety and comfort.

Liposuction and Fat Reinjection

Dr. Schulman considers the Brazilian butt lift to be two separate procedures. The first procedure is liposuction. Dr. Schulman will perform complete liposuction on you to sculpt your body and give you the slim, trim figure you desire.

Liposuction in a Brazilian butt lift may include slimming areas like the abdomen, flanks, upper back, lower back, thighs, and sometimes even the arms. Exactly how your liposuction is performed will depend on the way your fat is distributed, what you would like to look like after your procedure, and where Dr. Schulman feels it’s best to remove excess body fat. The exact liposuction technique Dr. Schulman will use with a BBL is slightly modified so that the fat can be preserved and processed correctly for reinjection.

Once liposuction has been performed, the fat will be prepared for the transfer process. And then, it’s time to start the reinjections. Dr. Schulman will reinject the processed fat in and around the hips and buttocks to achieve your aesthetic goals.

Can a BBL Go Wrong?

Often, a BBL gone wrong may have a droopy appearance. This generally occurs when fat has been reinjected too low on the butt. If fat has been reinjected to high on the butt, it can also have a “shelf-like” appearance.

The rest of the patient’s body matters tremendously as well. For example, Dr. Schulman will be looking at the patient’s legs to see how they should blend up into the buttocks area. If the patient has extremely thin legs, it will look totally unnatural if the hips are too wide.

Only doctors with a high level of skill can perform Brazilian butt lifts in a way that looks totally natural and attractive at the same time. Dr. Schulman has refined his technique over the 15+ years he has been performing Brazilian butt lifts. With his deep understanding of anatomy, extensive experience, and highly skilled team, he is able to reinject the fat exactly where it needs to go to create the look you’re after.

Recovery

You’ll spend a few hours after surgery in our recovery room before you can go home. Once you feel well enough, you will be discharged by Dr. Schulman.

At home during your BBL recovery, some pain and discomfort are to be expected. You’ll also have some swelling, which will begin to go down in the first few weeks. The pain you experience will be directly related to how much liposuction was performed. For approximately a week, you’ll feel that same pain, and afterward, for several weeks, you’ll be somewhat sore.

Even though swelling will still be present, you should be able to return to most of your regular activities after about two weeks.

When Will I See My BBL Results?

It will take time to see the results from your Brazilian butt lift. That’s because, in effect, every fat cell that is transferred from around your body to your hips and buttocks is like a small living transplant. It needs to survive in its new location in order to take effect and add volume to that body part. Overall, roughly 70 percent of transferred fat cells will survive.

This takes time, and it won’t be successful with absolutely every fat cell, which is why Dr. Schulman may carefully transfer slightly more fat than is actually necessary. That way, any lost fat cells will be made up for.

On average, it may be between six and 12 months before you see the absolute complete results from your procedure. However, you’ll definitely notice a difference in your figure after only about four to six weeks. In the meantime, it is of critical importance that you take care of your body. Most importantly, be sure to follow the aftercare instructions given to you by Dr. Schulman.

Frequently Asked Questions About BBLs

How much is a BBL?

Brazilian butt lifts may cost anywhere from $9,000 to $13,000 or more, but the price you pay will always vary and depend on multiple factors surrounding your particular surgery.

Butt implants vs BBL: Which is better?

In nearly every situation, a Brazilian butt lift is superior to butt implants. While butt implants were the only way to augment the size and shape of the buttocks many years ago, today, the BBL is far more popular.

The main reason a Brazilian butt lift is superior to butt lifts is that the results are more natural. You will not need to insert a foreign object into your body as is necessary with implants. Rather your own fat is used. This creates a smoother, more seamless appearance.

Furthermore, the fat can be evenly distributed for perfectly contoured curves. With a skilled surgeon performing the procedure, it is almost impossible to tell that any augmentation took place with a BBL.

Can I combine a BBL with other procedures?

Yes, of course. BBLs can be combined with breast augmentation and/or a breast lift, breast reduction, liposuction, a tummy tuck, and other procedures. Basically, you must be eligible for all of the surgeries you would like to get, and then they can be planned together — as in the case of a mommy makeover, for example.

Is a BBL pillow necessary?

You will not be able to sit normally after your Brazilian butt lift surgery, which is why many patients opt to purchase a BBL pillow or BBL chair. Essentially, a BBL pillow is a piece of equipment that allows you to sit for a longer period of time without the possibility of harming your BBL results.

It’s important to avoid sitting directly on your buttocks after the procedure because when pressure is applied to the area, it can make it more difficult for the new fat cells to adhere and stay in place. BBL pillows typically have a hole in the center so that your weight is not held up by your buttocks, but is rather held up by your thighs. This allows the butt to be lifted up higher.
